Social Security Payment Schedule: When Will You Be Paid?
Social Security pays retirement, disability, survivor and spouse benefits on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on whether the worker’s birthday falls on the 1st to 10th, 11th to 20th, or 21st to 31st. SSI is paid on the 1st. People who started Social Security before May 1997, who also get SSI, who live outside the U.S. or whose state pays their Medicare premium are paid on the 3rd. When a payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the money arrives on the business day before.

These come from Social Security’s payment day rules. Everyone paid on the same work record shares one payment day, set by the worker’s birthday, so a spouse, child or survivor is paid on the worker’s Wednesday, not their own, and the day can’t be changed on request. The 3rd-of-the-month group includes people in a Medicare Savings Program, because the state pays their premium.

The dates match Social Security’s payment calendars for both years. In November 2026, the second-Wednesday payment comes on Tuesday, November 10, because November 11 is Veterans Day. January 2027’s SSI and 3rd-of-the-month payments both arrive on Thursday, December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a holiday and January 3 is a Sunday.
Weekends, holidays and two SSI payments in one month
If a payment day is a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, it moves to the business day before, never after. For SSI, that sometimes pulls next month’s payment into the end of this month:
| Year | Two SSI payments in | No SSI payment in |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | July, October, December | August, November, January 2027 |
| 2027 | April, July, December | May, August, January 2028 |

It isn’t extra money. The second deposit is next month’s payment arriving early, so budget it for next month. March 2026 also had no SSI deposit, because March’s payment came on February 27.
Which month each payment covers
Social Security pays the month after the benefit is due, so the deposit you get in March is your February benefit. SSI works the other way: the payment on the 1st is for that same month. That’s why your first Social Security payment comes the month after the first month you’re entitled to, and why the last payment after a death is usually returned: the benefit for the month of death isn’t payable. For an eligible couple, the SSI amount is split and each person gets half.
The first payment date for a new claim follows the same schedule, and the yearly cost-of-living increase shows up in the January payment, which covers December.
Deposits that arrive off-schedule
Not every deposit follows the calendar. Back pay for a new claim, such as SSDI back pay or SSI back pay, arrives on its own date. If you worked last year, Social Security automatically refigures your benefit when your new earnings beat one of your 35 highest years and pays the increase back to January in a separate deposit, followed by a letter. A small unexpected deposit a few days before your regular payment is usually this recalculation, not a one-time bonus.
If your payment is late or missing
- Check with your bank first, since the delay may be in posting the deposit to your account.
- For anything mailed, allow three more mailing days before contacting Social Security.
- Check your payment history in your my Social Security account, or call 1-800-772-1213 and say “check delivery” to use the automated line.
- If it still hasn’t arrived, report it as missing to Social Security.
Paper checks are being phased out. Since September 30, 2025, federal benefits must be paid electronically, by direct deposit or a Direct Express prepaid card through GoDirect.gov. People who can’t use electronic payments, for example because of a mental impairment or living somewhere without access to a bank, can ask the Treasury for a waiver.
